BAN KI MOON
Ban Ki Moon is currently the United Nations’ 8th Secretary-General, having succeeded SG Kofi Annan in 2007. Ban was South Korea’s most prominent figure in the country’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and in the United Nations. Ever since his childhood, Ban has always dreamed of becoming a diplomat and he pursued his dream right after graduating college. He was first assigned in India and there started building his reputation as a diplomat.
CAREER
Ban Ki Moon served as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for Korea from January of 2004 to November 2006. It was during his last year as Korea’s Foreign Minister that Ban started his campaign for the Secretary-General post. Though considered a weak candidate for the post at first, Ban’s experience and travels as Korea’s Foreign Minister established ties that catapulted him ahead of his fellow competitors for the Secretary-General position.
In October 2006, Ban Ki Moon was officially elected as the UN’s 8th Secretary-General by the United Nations General Assembly. Ever since sitting down in his new post, Ban has been actively pushing his advocacies, giving special attention to the issues in Darfur, Sudan, and the environmental threat of Global Warming.
Ban has made it his mission to continue what the UN has been advocating through the years, “[building] consensus on contentious issues” and “[setting] standards for nations to live by.” He has personally initiated talks among important personalities involved and has continued to lead the UN with excellence and humility.
The United Nations is one of the most recognizable organizations in the world. Aiming to create solidarity among the different countries of the world, the UN facilitates international cooperation making sure that every nation complies with universal laws and practices.
