NBC
One of the most prominent and recognizable companies in the United States and all over the world, the National Broadcasting Corporation or NBC is a television network based in New York’s Rockefeller Center with other offices based in Burbank, California.
The company was formed in 1926 as the Radio Corporation of America. It is considered the first major broadcasting network in the United States. It is nicknamed the Peacock Network because of its peacock tail company logo that was created to symbolize color broadcasting. In 1986, control of the company was passed on to General Electric via GE’s $6.4 billion acquisition of RCA. The new partnership was headed by Bob Wright as NBC’s chief executive until his retirement. The company is now headed by Jeff Zucker, who took over after Wright retired.
NBC is home to many television shows that have helped shape US television. Shows such as the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, Late Night with David Letterman, I Dream of Jeannie, Emergency!, the Dean Martin Show, Saturday Night Live, Diff’rent Strokes, The Facts of Life, Tonight Show with Jay Leno, the Late Night with Conan O’Brien, F.R.I.E.N.D.S, E.R., Frasier, Mad About You and Will & Grace have all been instrumental in making NBC one of the most popular television networks in the world.
NBC today is a part of the bigger company NBC Universal, which is a unit of the General Electric Company. GE purchased the remaining 20% of the company from Vivendi to claim overall ownership of the company. In December of 2009, GE announced that it is planning to sell 51% stake of the company to Comcast marking another change in the company’s ownership.
NBC is available all over the United States, an estimated 112 million households. Today, the company continues to light up televisions in homes all over America and the world through its various stations across the United States and its affiliates in other foreign countries.
